Re: Fork Springs
Just to follow up, I have just gotten my XT out after sitting for over 2 years. I have just cleaned the carbs and going over everything else along with a new battery. I did order and receive the Wilbers 641 fully adjustable shock and new Matching front fork springs for my weight. I have not ...

Re: A 3AJ to spruce up
It sounds like you already found the problem, you said loaner cdi worked perfectly. Testing in the bike certainly is better than any test on a bench setup. 50 volts from the stator coil does not sound low to me. Please explain your logic here.

Re: My 3AJ rebuild
The low comperssion is a thing to deal whit, but the main reason for this heavy oil smoke has to be the leak from the oil channal, the amount of oil on top of the piston can´t just come from low compression. Also explains why the heavy oil smoke started same time as oil pressuer got to the top end ...

Re: Engine detonation
The very best to you on your trip.... Sounds like fun....
Yeah, from what I've read on RR's, fuel can get pretty scarce in some countries and you have to resort to buying from people along the road out of glass jugs etc. No telling what you get. Better be able to run on very poor quality fuel and a ...

Re: Engine detonation
Jets hard to come by, USA models needle jet are not adjustable, at least easily. No extra grooves. Can large carbon buildup cause detonation due to hot spots? With compression as low as it is, If it were mine, I'd pull it down and have a look after doing the oil in the cylinder test.

Re: Engine detonation
Your compression numbers are low, try squirting some oil in the cylinder then do the compression check again. If the pressure goes up then the rings are leaking the pressure. If no change then your valves are leaking. Simple test.

Re: My 3AJ rebuild
Compression is on the very low end. You may have found your MAIN problem. Other leaks probably just need new seals and gaskets.

Re: My 3AJ rebuild
My "use OEM" is from experience and from reading of others experience. I am sure there are other quality products out there, but how do you know in advance. I know the OEM are good and strive to use them when ever possible. Use what you can afford. We have an advantage in the USA of buying from ...

Re: My 3AJ rebuild
Do a compression test. Pressure should be around 150psi or more. Other than valve seals, I do not see how a head can make any difference in oil burning. Always use a new OEM head gasket. If you pull the top end off again, have the piston to cylinder clearance checked. If it is in tolerance then have ...

Re: My 3AJ rebuild
Check your compression. Should be 150 psi or more. Oil could be getting by your rings. Did you hone cylinder with new rings and check piston to cylinder clearance? Check for oval cylinder? My 1986 usa xt checks at 170 lbs psi. Stock original engine, never apart aside from rocker box reseal and side ...
