Problems kickstarting my 43F XT600

Few weeks ago my the ignition coils on my stator burned out, eventually managed to source a good condition one from the dreaded ebay.
Last night went to pick up my bike from my local mechanics and it took a good 20 kicks to get it started, I put this down to it being a very cold day and it had been sitting outside all day.
But this morning when I went to start it again it still took a good 15/20 kicks to start.
Before I had trouble with the Stator it was taking a max 2/3 kicks to start it in the morning.
As I'm not mechanically minded I need help from the XT Gurus on here on what the cause maybe and how I can get it fixed.
It has had a new spark plug so it's not that.
Any help and knowledge will be greatly appreciated.

I assume it did not take 20 kicks to start it before and you know how to bring an xt600 to life in 1-2 kicks? Excuse the questions but we have to eliminate the obvious first.

When you get it going, how well does it run?

Assuming:

1. You have the right spark plug.
2. The carb has not been touched (and it was working fine before).

Then the problem is probably still with the ignition.

It does have the correct spark plug and I assume the carb has not been touched.

This weekend I am taking it to a mates who knows a bit about bikes. We are going to check the fuel filter, check the gap on the spark plug and also the charge in the battery as it may be quite old, so hopefully this may solve it, if not, back to the garage.

Does anybody on here got any other ideas what we may check easily to see if it improves the starting on cold.

In your troubleshooting, please remember that the CDI spark is COMPLETELY independent of the battery.
In fact the bike will run just fine with no battery.

This is why CDI is your friend, if you leave the lights or ignition on and flatten the battery you can still
kick 'er in the guts and she will get you home.

With later models ('90 on) with transistor assisted ignition you must have good battery to run.
(or a jump start,.... not easy if you are on your own out in the back of Burke)

My personal experience was that my pick up coil died! As a result the standart kicking procedure was not longer there......
Before that my bike would start 2-3 kicks.
So I took the black plastic/metal part to the ignition guys.Remember there is no separate replacement for it.
I imagine you installed the stator + pick up coil from ebay.This must be faulty!
Try to use your old coil and try!
In my case after they rewind the old pick up coil I can garantee 1 kick start now!!!!!Horny bike!
