The beginning of a new friendship

Post by ausrally »

I bought this 1VJ in the Netherlands last week. :shades:
I had one almost identical back in the 90's in Australia. Looking forward to getting out and seeing some of Europe on this. :riding:

She's a good clean example, pretty much all standard

With very low km's, I would never have found a bike like this in Aus.

So now the work begins, The bike has been sitting in a shed for 8yrs, so first will be new tyres, and a full service.

keen to hear of any mods, or upgrades people recommend to make her as reliable as possible.

Cheers :nannawave:

That is one very clean 1VJ Ian :eekers:

Is that an original R5 T2 in the background?

It's been said before but that is a very clean example! Nice purchase.
Mods I know of - Use a 3AJ oil pump, the standard airbox breathes from just above the engine. You could block them off and install the 3AJ's rear breathing snorkel to get cooler air in.Or maybe just remove the blanking piece altogether on your standard airbox.
The 3AJ has an extra oil feed on the clutch casing side and larger engine studs(?) on the cylinder. Both can be modded but I'm not sure how is best to do these. There are people on here, much better educated on these matters.
Mezo recently put me onto a German site about this model. It's well worth a read.
Over heating was a main issue with the 1VJ's.The 3AJ pretty much sorted them all.Back in the day, people with air cooled off roaders would weld fin extensions for better cooling(something I have thought of doing but I haven't read about anyone doing this on here...) and drilling big holes in the front mudguard, for better air flow. The lower front guard on the later 3AJ avoided this.I wouldn't be drilling your nice standard one though.Do it to an aftermarket mudguard.
Thats about all I can think of for now but more people know more on this forum.
Cheers
