I live in Norway, and my bike is in serious need of some care. I'm afraid I'll have to much to do, and my skills also have to be developed during repairs. So I'm thinking of driving my bike or car (with bike on) to Sweden, Poland, Germany, Lithuania or other place. Repairs cost:
150$/h in Norway I think (and parts is expensive too).
100$/h in Switzerland (Geneva).
What is normal price in Europe/World (would be nice to know when planning long ride)?

How many kilometres has your 34L done now? and has it had any engine work done previously?
The main thing that will stop you on a journey is the engine, other things like wheel bearings, leaky forks seals or CDI can be fixed by yourself or any "bush mechanic"
I would recommend Dave Lambeth in the UK, rebuilding XT`s is what he does & he is know for his workmanship plus he guarantees his work.
You could take the whole bike to him (long way) or you could just drop the engine & stick it in the boot of your car, or even get prices to freight it to him.
While the engine is away it gives you time to replace all the bearings on the bike, service the forks (new seals & oil) plus any small jobs.
You will have to enquire about prices & exchange rates (Pound versus Krone) to see if its finacially worth it, there may be a guy in Germany who does the same service? im not sure.

Thanks Mezo & behnix... I'll consider the options you mentioned :-) I think a list of mechanics would be great for more than me.
I bought my 34L (registered August 1983 in Norway (the oldest one in .no ?)) in 2012 with 51000km on it, for 6000kr (about 1000USD) changed clutch wire and rear brake bands, and has just refilled oil since (+ some cosmetic first aid). Using it every day from end of February to beginning of November now with 58000km. I think last service/engine maintainance was done in 1995 +-5 yrs... :-)
