A 3AJ to spruce up

Again could not resist a bargain price xt while knowing its been taken care of by a few farmers before laying my hands on it, besides a few obvious problems --noisy worn starter, cracked rims and no rear brake with incorrect part butchered in to fit and some worn crappy fitting body parts it was fine. Motor pulled well sounded healthy although jerky at slow speeds





So this we wanted to change back to blue(the bike was original blue) and hopefully upgrade a bit to this dream



I first wanted it working and running properly before stripping for respray etc. The starter problem was solved as per write up in workshop section with a new starter clutch bought and fitted- Pete J my resident engineer also sorted the rear brake problem once we found a 2nd hand unit which he rebuilt- and wala - 3AJ runs nicely and starter sounds healthy. Feels somehow faster bigger than 34 L but where specific i'm not sure. This w/end we started the big strip and as the body panels came off it revealed a wiring harness as bad as my 34L b4 various repairs. As there is a few more wires than on the 34L and the colour matching was not so wow i took lots of pics

Stripping went well with most bolts turning out with only a few more items added to replacement list, while wriggling the carb off the left side trumpet just broke in two(not a new break) hope Yamaha still has replacement


Also found after putting some fuel in that reason for the fuel stain is the tank is rubbed through by fairing on left bottom



wiring condition- probably not terrible- but with colour changes and crap joins -- grey hairs




probably 5 hours later down to bare frame- take a bit longer to go back again


I also busted the little fitting where rev counter cable goes into c/head

Some cleaning up and paint stripper - seal the fuel tank and prepare for paint- the fairing bit was repaired skew and will need some modification, thinking of maybe bigger screen. Still waiting on rim man on availability of rims required- spokes are available ex yamaha but thats it.

Like we have to much time on hand started doodling around by making ornaments out of old tools- having a a few 2 stroke engines around saw a idea for a lamp- xt bottom end and 2 stroke head mounted on a wooden board (needs some tidying)- i think it can look good in a man cave set up-no pics of light on but bulb sits in top of cylinder - some paint and polishing- phew, Back to work

Slow progress is all to report -- all bits pieces sprayed and coming back -tank stayed as is got bumped but the blue is just wow- pic of fairing on top of frame(still waiting for prep) and mudguard





Still waiting for new rims and spokes- back wheel changing back to standard 18inch again and a few others but the only needle in the haystack is the yellow fork rubbers - all the colours but yellow is available -thinking of trying Suzuki for the old RM standard fork -if not to pricey and then also undecided on the sticker layout
Any advice on suppliers on fork rubbers appreciated other then the 25 pound e bay

Looks nice Joe..... I use Wemoto for my fork boots.... make sure you tell 'em you want the same yellow as their logo though...

So we got of our ass a bit and started putting xt3 back together- suffering here with a heatwave around 30 plus every day and the wind has blowing like shit plus i have not been on leave since last year- bit tired is the word. But as it came together pretty quick-- is she a beaut
