New 1VJ on the road

Bought from a friend who raced her down in Marocco. After that it was sitting in a car park for 14 years.
Due to the sorry state I needed a disfunct donor for most suspension parts and electrics. Plus some parts from my bins ...
Most of the plastics were bleached, switches and plugs crumbling.

Me and my son and his girlfriend were working on it for 6 weeks on and off, now the Ténéré is ready to ride for him.
Built it from the naked frame (which I spray painted with 2K PU truck paint).
Had roadworthyness checked Monday, no issues found.



Still some work to be done

• Add pannier/bag rack
• Add some stickers maybe
• Swap stock rear suspension for a Wilbers 640 (slightly shorter) and adjust side stand height
• Mount enduro style mirrors
• Wire heated grips (Daytona) and RAM mounts and 12V sockets for navigation
• Add vents to front fender
• Add oil thermometer
• Mount Acerbis Rallye hand guards
• Give some more TLC to the plastics
• LED rear light cluster
• Swap cable operated choke for a push button one

Some parts used:

• Original engine (matching numbers, estimated 70.000 km, needs some love)
• Manual decompression lever
• Original carbie (fitted leaner primary main jet and richer secondary main jet)
• Original exhaust in good nick (after rust removal and repaint, seems to be solid)
• Li-Ion battery on original regulator, so e-start works well.
• 3AJ fuel taps
• Kedo repair sprocket set to prevent further wear on the output shaft
• Ariete fork gaiters
• Stainless steel foot rests
• KTM chain guides
• Braided steel brake line
• Sakura horn
• 3AJ air box with seat oriented intake (cooler)
• Fuel pump delete
• Front disk brake cover delete
• 15-44 (I think)

Spare engine to be rebuilt is already sitting at home.

Just a quick question Andy, your choice of dropping the main jet size on the primary, is it an altitude thing or have you found it behaves better generally? Mine is quite nice down low now, but wouldn’t mind a bit more pull at speed/throttle.

I have seen your recent question, Donny :-)

But I have to tell the complete story here.
The 1VJ model had two main jet settings there
First edition 145/125 which had overheating problems due to restricted airflow and bad airfilter design.
So they changed it to 160/130 to prevent further damage which made the engine a bit sluggish but cooler.

My late carb came with 150/130 which I left as is, so this is kind of a bastard setting in reference to both original settings:

(fitted leaner primary main jet and richer secondary main jet)

We then did set the mixture screw to original 2,5 turns out (kind of hard to adjust with the starter motor in place)

BUT:
Front fender has additional cooling vents, and fender is tilted upwards a bit.
Airbox is from a 3AJ model so air intake is from the air filter access opening.

As far as I can tell the carb has original needle jets and needles, we did put them in the default (middle) position. Not having a 3AJ intake snorkel we fitted one from a 2RW 500 cc model which may have less throughput.
Engine ran VERY rich like that (not driveable really), so we left the air filter access hatch open. Now she is pulling nicely.

We are still working on the correct setting here. I only fitted a working oil thermometer 3 days ago.
And I got a KOSO Lambda set yesterday which I plan to fit to get it right.
We also got a 3AJ intake snorkel this week.

But I cant promise a quick result, this may well become an autumn project.

I asked around amongst my 1VJ owning friends, most of them use the original 1986 setting 145/125 and a sligthly richer idle jet (48 instead of 46) with 3AJ intake mod and modified front fender.

Yeah 145 and 46 I had before as per manual, when I was chasing the mixture before realising stator was wrecked. Have a 48 and 150 in at the mo with rear airbox lid removed, so might start afresh again. Thanks for the reply.
