It will be finished, I need to get my finger out. My third brothers 50 in 2022 and my second brother has just had his 50th, so 2022 summer is the absolute line in the sand. My 34L goes for MOT on Friday, but she's sorted for the big trip.
I'll get the 3TB cases vapour blasted in the next couple of weeks. I think the engine needs to be black to get it looking right, so they'll need painting.
I've got the bits needed to rebuild it, including the normal new 5th gear, and all seals etc. Top ends finished, cranks been done.
It'll be a big boost to get a motor oil tight, finished and in the frame.
Which reminds me, I need to plate some of the carb brackets.....

Got a bit of time over the weekend and vapour blasted my engine cases.



They're 3TB.
I bought the engine as a running machine sold by a guy who showed me it running on his phone.
They must be really tough motors. When I stripped it the head had a bent inlet valve, I've talked about this before.
When it came to taking the barrel off the cases one of the large alloy nuts had corroded itself into the cooling fins on the barrel. That was a massive job to separate the case from the barrel without damaging anything. There was also one of the bolts on the timing chain side broken, and the oil drain thread was butchered.
I'll give the cases another clean in warm water and they can go in the ultrasonic bath to get rid of the last of the glass media.
After that they can be sprayed black.
My plan is to get the bottom end finished over the Christmas period and the top end which is already complete onto that. So hopefully engine in the frame over that period as well.

Happened to me twice with those large alloy barrel nuts Dan... I cut through the stud and the nut with my multi saw. It's on my thread somewhere.... those bloody nuts are a pain in the arse..

I used those multi purpose hole saw in a drill and gently drilled down, starting just under the diameter of the cylinder where it goes down, and got progressively smaller diameter bits until I had the stud diameter, it took forever.
I was as gentle as can be and still damaged the stud that retains the barrel. There was a time where I'd decided just to sacrifice the barrel in order to keep the cases.

Got some done over Christmas, not enough but it concentrates the mind and made me get all the awkward stuff like seals and bearings ordered.
So the age old process of heat the outer and cool the inner to make the task easier. Bearings in the freezer for an hour or two, cases heated up to 100 C in the oven, and some patience.

All the bearings are bought from a bearing supplier and not through Yamaha, other than the clutch acctuator in the case.

Need to get the piston on the connecting rod, then the top end can go back on. The complete top end is finished so that move the job on a bit.
Then engine into the frame and she'll start to look a little more complete.
Been working on my David Brown tractor

Bought a nice new GPR exhaust manifold from Italy, and it managed to arrive before Brexit so no VAT added.
Next time I'm over at work I'll drop it in for ceramic coating, gloss black to match the rear pipe.
