I believe the 39E was built for the Australian market and the 34L for the rest of the world. What the difference is beats me but I'm guessing it was probably conformance to European standards the we (Aussies) were able to get away with at the time..Also, looking at Yamaha supplementary service manual 39E-28197-60 which starts at #39E-000101 and Yamaha supplementary service manual 53R-28197-20 which starts at bike #39E-004101, both books are written in English, French & Italian, 34L isn't mentioned, does that mean the model is actually 39E rather than 34L as called by some people?
