Don't worry you wont hurt the engine. Just put fresh oil in and fix the fuel tap and the float levels.
It is common practice to flush an engine with a 50/50 mix of kerosene and motor oil, so your little bit of fuel will do no harm.
I never hurt an engine doing it, besides all engines dilute oil with fuel as they run.

it holds 2.2lts of oil so i had 2.8lts of petrol in there

filled a 5lt bottle right to the top

What I meant was, that after draining, there could only be a small residue of fuel in the engine. You agree??

Dan that oil filter (same brand) was $16.15 RRP.

i fitted new oil filter, filled up with nice clean oil, put 5lts of premium fuel in the tank, got it started but it will only idle with the choke on, could it be too lean as i havn't got the air filter on? (its on order)

Yes, it sounds like it is running lean. However the air filter restriction should only be minimal, try putting the old cleaner on temporarily and see what that does.
It's also been farkin cold in Brissy....colder than Melbourne...Ha,Ha. Try letting it run for a while until you can take the choke off.
Or....You may have another problem.

It went down to a chilly 6°C last night, thank fuck it warmed to a sunny 23°C during the day.

it had an aftermarket foam air filter and it fell apart so i'll have to wait, i'll warm it up and have a fiddle see if i can get it to idle, would i be able to balance the carbs if it will only idle on the choke?

I would only attempt to balance the carbs after going for a good hard run, blowing the cobwebs out and getting it HOT.
