Hey gang...

as some of you may know i was the proud owner of a couple of sweet tenere's in the past..

a 1999 660 and a 1990 750


a fair bit has changed for me in the last 2 years

I went through a separation from my long time partner and have made a move from Brisbane to a beach town near Bundaberg so to help pay for all that to happen some of my toys needed to go

anyhoo .. now I'm settled in here at Moore Park Beach with my new partner Nikki ( who also loves her Yamaha's .. she's got a ttr 230 and a wr250r ) We thought it was time to get another tenere ....


What we decided to do was get an oldie to have as a project ...

what we wanted was something that wanst a complete wreck that we could tidy up together and use for a while until we get financial enough to give it a full restoration...

here is what we found .. a 1986 1VL

she starts and runs so most of our first part of the tidy up will be cosmetic and getting all the bits to work as they should then ride it and enjoy it for a while

the only bits that are missing that i can tell so far are the kick start lever and a tail rack..

if any of you guys have either of those laying around and would like to sell them to me, please let me know

I've never restored a bike before so no doubt there will be plenty of fuck ups along the way but this is going to be an adventure that we both can't wait to sink our teeth into

hmmmm...

looks like a bit of creative welding may be required...or sadly if it's too far gone it'll have to be parted out and the search for another will continue

well my mate in brisbane picked the bike up today and got it back to his place....

i asked him to send me some pics of the subframe seeing as Mezo has had me worrying for the last couple of days ... and she seems to be pretty good

wont know exactly how good until i get down to brisbane next week then bring it home and start pulling it to bits

can't wait

For a moment i thought the rear subframe had been bodged, now i can see its just to hold the indicators on.

the indicators appear to be held on with some home made aluminium brackets....

the 2 gold bolts in the black tube make me think that maybe the tubes are for a gearsack rack or something similar...

well i got the old girl home finally and road her around our property and she rides a treat


put her up on the bench and started tinkering



at this stage we are planning on getting her registered and making her look a bit prettier so my first project was to go through and get all the lights and indicators working

we have a little oil leak coming from the rocker cover which appears to be siliconed together ( and not very nicely done)

i've looked in the workshop manual i have and there doesnt appear to be a gasket
do any of you guys know if there is meant to be a gasket or do i just silicon it again???

then we get to the fun stuff...
the plastics are in ok condition and seeing as i have no clue where to source some more, we're gonna attempt to paint these up



i must admit that i am really enjoying tinkering away on the old girl .. here's hoping i dont fuck it up too much

Yes. It is actually an XT kicker, not a TT. TT's are forged alloy.

No Gasket!! This is to preserve cam bearing clearances. Use a sealer. I prefer Locktite anerobic type gasket maker.
