started my resto on this machine, intending a ground up rebuild, see how it pans out

this bikes the 'black' version, perhaps powder coated frame & lots of black spray bomb all over the place

The previous owner said the bike sat in the shed for years and his dog would piss on the wheel. that wheel is off my spares bike, I thought being in worse condition than the wheel on the bike I'm restoring, i'd rebuild them first while keeping the others intact till I've finished lacing up.

I could never get this engine started, no spark, I didn't put too much effort in, it certainly felt like it had plenty of compression.
I started pulling it apart, someone has at some stage put a high comp piston, it's 96mm
barrel looks ok, i think.

The middle cam journal seems to be in bad condition, the corresponding part of the cam not so bad or am I mistaken?


is that serviceable or repairable?
I found an engraved number on the barrel, head & head cover, probably from being in a machine shop at some.
I can see a bead of sealant where the engine cases join, so it's been apart at some stage, the con rod doesn't appear to have any slop(apart from a bit of side to side), i still need to have a look down inside to check out the gears, I've ordered one of those usb camera things, yet to arrive.

I took the head, cover & cam to a motorcycle engineer, he said just give it a bit of wet & dry to remove any high spots and just use it, he said similar things used to happen to old Honda XRs.
Probably lack of oil getting there.

Made a stand for the engine.

I have read that you can tidy up the journals by lapping down the cam cover and head joint, effectively closing the bore down and then running a hand lap/hone through to restore the size.
