Hey everyone, I'm on the hunt for a 1VJ clutch cover to match a set of case halves. I'm trying to rebuild a 3AJ with 1VJ case halves but need the clutch cover for the starter motor mounts. Anybody holding onto the elusive unobtanium? I can pay for delivery to the States if it doesn't run in the thousands of dollars... damn shipping fees

The 1VJ uses a bracket to mount the starter motor, the covers did not have them cast in until the 3AJ

Looks like that

The lugs on the rear end of the starter are a bit different as well, the 1VJ starter lines up with the bracket and the later starter has longer, offset lugs that line up with the bosses on the crank case. I found this out when I fitted my 1VJ starter to my new 3TB motor, I made some spacers to go between the lugs on the starter down to the crank case bosses but it needed to starter to be rotated slightly which caused the rods that hold the starter ends together foul on the oil return pipe. I just fitted the original bracket and all was good, it made it look a bit more original as well.

Can you post some photos of what you encountered?

Hi,
here is the 1VJ starter on the 3TB motor using the original mounting bracket from the old motor. You can see the unused boss with the arrow pointing to it. The other one is obscured by the motor. Also notice the angular displacement between the lugs on the starter and the boss, I originally made some spacers and longer bolts to mount the starter after rotating the starter so the lugs were parallel with the boss.
The spacers looked fine when the motor was on the bench but when I put the motor back in the frame I could not fit the oil return pipe because rods holding the starter together got in the way.
I hope this makes sense.
All the best, Dave
