How does a bed for rebuilding an engine has to look?

I want to do some work on my spare engine, open it and see how it looks inside (engine stored for 3 years and no idea when runed for the last time). 62.000kms

I will have a local blacksmith build the framebed, I just have to tell him what he has to do.

My idea is: a rectangular base and at the two extremes, a double arm with an axle at the end, to make them fit inside the engine mounting points, one front and one rear.

Is it OK?


BTW: I have never ever gone further than changing oil, levers, pedals, filters or brake pads. I am SCARED of trying this by myself. I have an SZR660 service manual (Yamaha edited). It looks pretty accurate but will it be enough?
I dont have too many tools either. What I'm trying is to learn and if needed, change rings? piston? valves? etc??

If somebody wants the manual, tell me. If you have the specyfic 3YF / 4MY tell me even more

Hi Vander, I copied Mezo's engine stand and it works very well. You just need a square base and a couple of uprights to bolt to the motor.

You can buy them from Kedo if you didnt want to make one yourself.

But its very basic, a square frame with front & rear brackets, just take you engine to the blacksmith (easier that way).

Bring the engine to the blacksmith is easier to say than done. That thing is terribly heavy. Not nice to load into my Corsa. I will hire this:

Im unable to give you any measurements as my engine holder is still in Perth, sorry Vander.

I got a Kedo one, but I can't measure that either 'cos it's still at Mr. Lambeth's.....

I use a SZR manual for my engine work, it is identical to the 4MY but has different carb specs

If you just want to strip the head & barrel you'll need a torque wrench, sockets & valve spring compressor.

If you decide to strip the bottom end, you'll need a way of holding the clutch so you can undo its' center nut, either a tool made for the job or lock your engine sprocket to your "engine frame" ( ) with an old chain & put the engine in gear. (A proper clutch tool will reduce the chance of damaging gears).

Seeing as the heads coming off, how about some porting?

I carried a GSXR750 engine home on my tenere, really fucked up the handling!

They don't list one for the xtz660. engine sizes and mounts can't be that different from the 600 to the 660, no?



I will show the picture to the artist and ask him for how much can he do that. 50€ is not that bad. I thought it should be more expensive.

If you copy Mezos' engine stand it will give you some adjustment for future projects
