Hi all
starter motor running slugish even with a new battery
Have taken the starter off and when i spin it by hand it feels lumpy/resistance if you catch my drift!
I have taken an old one apart that does the same and the inside is not round anymore .
is this my starting problem?
Does anybody know if a different yamaha has a 1vj starter?

Thanks guys :book:

Not round anymore? never heard that? can you post some pics of what you mean please.

Some pics HERE on starter motor subject on this site.

The motor is common on many bikes (different makes also) but DO NOT buy the cheap Chinese ones on ebay, your better off buying a used OEM Yammy one & servicing it (new brush kit).

sorry Mezzo
I didn't explain myself very well!
The container that the armature goes in is not round on the inside, could this cause a sluggish starter motor issue?
the brushes are worn down to the 20 mark on them with one even shorter
New brushes perhaps?

The picture of the inside of my starter motor
you can feel the dips in between the magnets
You were right about how easy it is to put a picture on here!

That starter looks quite normal to me....

Have you checked the bush in the rear or the bearing in the front cover?

Try the starter on the floor with a battery & jump leads.... connect earth lead to starter body and touch the pos lead to the connector... the starter should spin freely. Put your foot on the starter to keep it stable.

They're always pretty difficult to turn by hand, even when new.

Should be the same as 3tb , I use Raptor starters since they're more readily available . Aftermarket version don't last . The armature shouldn't be hitting the sleeve as it seems to be doing , hard to say without it in hand .

Hi found out the hard way that this is not true.
1VJ and 3AJ Starter motors are different.
3AJ will not fit a 1VJ engine, we trued that.
Maybe it works the other way round.

Picture shows both, 1VJ is the darker, shorter, dirtier one ...

Best way is to check the numbers on the parts list.

Thanks for clarifying that Andy, i did exactly that & found it was a different part number from the 1VJ.
