Solenoid clicking but the bike wont start

Hello all,
So this problem of mine started after the winter. In the early spring I decided to take my bike for a ride, but to my surprise the starter would not crank over, only the solenoid was clicking. My dad helped me push start the bike, ant the problem dissapeared for a while. I have been riding for most of the spring without any problems. Last week, the problem accured again, after siting in the garage for a few days it wouldnt start, after I click the button and only the solenoid would make the clicking sound. I tried connecting the bike to my car battery, because I thought the battery might be old and no longer capable of starting the bike, still, the bike would not turn over. So had to push start the bike once again. While we were riding with my friends, they helped me push start the bike twice. Sometimes the starter turns, sometimes it does not. Maybe somebody has had the same problem? I checked the voltage of the battery, it showed 12.5 volts, when not running, I assume that is good. I would appreciate any tips on how to check if the solenoid is faulty, if the starter is faulty.
Thanks for your help!
