55W CDI and stator problems

Good evening all!
I need to ask for some wisdom.
1985 XT600 55W. Kickstart.
Bike runs fine, but I'm not charging. Stator just does not seem to putting out any power.
I'm lucky enough to have a second bike worth of parts, so I have tried another Voltage Regulator, and swapped the stator.
Symptoms the same.
Stator looks like the 43F pictured above. Two white wires on one plug. Three on another, and a Blue, Brown and Red on independent plugs. There is also a shorter blue wire that attaches to maybe an oil press switch on the bottom of the block.
I have not rung out the entire harness yet. From the diagram shown above (thank you!) looks like you should see 13v-14v at the Red/Black on the harness from the stator?
Any insight would be great, thanks!

Easy question first: is your battery new? Old batteries don’t charge if they have sat for a while. Lead acid batteries that have been drained to zero a few times won’t charge back up either. So, consider that first.
Step one is to ensure you are grounding the reg/rect sufficiently. Normally the mounting bolts act as the ground conduit, but i and many others have run a 16 gauge wire from the reg/rect bolt to a frame bolt nearby.
Next check the DC output of the reg/rect. With the bike running you should get 12-14 volts DC current. If no reading check your ground and try again.
Next unplug the 2 white wire connector and insert the voltmeter leads in the two wires going down to the stator. With the bike running you should get around 15 VAC at idle and up to 95 VAC when revving. If you get that but nothing out the reg/rect then check the reg/rect ground one more time and then swap the reg/rect. I’ve had quite a few reg/rect go bad but rarely a stator.
If none of this works check your charging coil and pickup coil resistance. These specs are from the 3aj but should be very close.
Good luck!

Ok, excellent information.
So no danger in taking readings from the stator and regulator while unplugged. Ok.
Now the battery is not new, and it's been the victim of abuse. How much current does the system realistically put out? I would have expected the system to give a bit of a charge to the battery based on the specified 10a output, but maybe that's not a realistic number.
I will try the proceedures listed above tomorrow and reply with my finding.
Thank you so much! This is a big help. Not many of this Generation Tenere's over here in Eastern Canada.
Stay safe all.

Alright then, some testing done:
Stators measure within specification.
The output of the stator is 15v at idle, and up to 55vac at 2500, didn't go higher as the wife is working from home. :)
Checked resistance of regulator to frame. Added wire and measured less than 1 ohm.
Output of Reg between the red and blk, was 6v on the first reg, and when reved would drop to 3v.
Second Regulator, grounded again, output was between 9.5v and 11v at idle, and dropped to 6v to 8v when revved up.
Battery was charged over night, and sat at 12.3v, so soft, but not stone dead.
Looks like it's a regulator? Both of them ironically?

It does indeed look like the reg/rect.
Go one step further and check the ohm resistances of the stator coils. If those are also in spec then you’ll know for sure that the reg/rect are bad.
I dealt with bad electrics for a while on my 43F, buying new off-brand reg/rect to sort out a charging issue after two of my OEM died, but those aftermarket reg/rect were all dead on arrival. I finally got an OEM from ebay that worked but it took a few tries. Sometimes we hit some bad luck with 30+ year-old parts.

I did check the stators, within spec. I'll check my paperwork again...
So you brought up my next question. What is the best source vs price on these little units?
I have found some on ebay. Some priced better than others.
One design looks near idential, but only 4 wire. Looking at the schematics, it appears the brown wire is not connected on the output of the Reg. Now that is only sort of an issue, because once you switch on the ignition, the brown is connected to the +12hot. What is the purpose of this brown one?
There is also a wide variety of generic "12v Regulators" Anyone ever gone this route and tried to figure out the pin out on one?
Thanks in advance!
