Does anyone know what is the XT600Z 34L choke knob thread size? It doesn't seem to be M4 or M5, maybe M4.5?

The 34L has a handlebar mounted thumb lever. so no choke knob as such.
The later 1VJ has a more conventional choke knob still rather awkwardly mounted on the handlebars.
Or do you mean the carb end?

Hello and thank you. That's weird, mine, a 1985 34L has a choke knob on the left side of the carburettor..
I did not notice a handlebar mounted choke, but I just bought it and will check in the morning.

The small tank models had this tank, but it was often retrofitted on the Teneres and for good reason.
The cable actuated choke has its problems, due to the long cable, a quite exposed coupling box half way and a rather weak return spring.

I think the knob is just pressed onto the shaft, with no threading - at least this was the case on my sons 1VJ retrofit where it came loose. I would recommend using some 2-part adhesive like JB weld to keep it in place permanently. It is goof practise to roughen up the shaft andget it squeaky clean with acetone before applying the glue.

The respective complete assemblies can be ordered at the Yamaha dealer for a premium price.

The later choke type with the needle can be used as well after removing the needle (e.g. with a dremel tool).

Mine seems to be spring loaded and springs back in when I release it...
I'll have to verify if I have an original carburettor...

They have a little detent which can become worn over time, if it's working correctly it will latch on.
