Speedo Repair

Hello,
I have repaired the speedo on my XT600-1VJ. I thought I would post some images of how I went about it, might help someone in the future. The reason for the repair was the needle jumping at first then a failure to indicate speed. The speedo is a sealed unit and not designed to be taken apart. I made a tool from a broken hacksaw blade to scrape a groove and get the case apart and allow it to be easily assembled/sealed later. The Trip Reset Knob is a left hand thread and mine unscrewed fine! The needle is very hard to get off the spindle but it did finally come off.

Takes a little while to cut your way in all around the raised edge.



With mine I found the spindle and bore the magnet spins on, the bit that the square ended cable drives was worn, a bit too much clearance!
The whole assembly is tricky to get apart as all the spindles are held in place by squishing the frame around the ends. You can deform the chassis to get them out and it is fairly easy to bend it back on assembly
This is an assembly that is peened over at the square drive end. It is hard but possible to force the peened edge back up and slide the bush off the spindle. I made a new bush from Phos-bronze. The spindle was also worn but couldn't get that assembly apart easily.
I peened over the end using a suitably sized ball bearing with a 0.10mm feeler gauge in there to give some end float.



The main problem was the Trip Counter, it was stuck solid with old grease. Just a dismantle, clean and reassemble sorted this.


Sealed up with RTV silicone sealant.
Oh and don't use IPA to clean the dial, it dissolves the paint, should of known that!
Luckily I had another spare speedo so I use a electric screwdriver to spin the cable, noted the kmh and then put the needle back on repaired speedo to read the same. I might set up a servo and note the rpm to kmh numbers for future reference.
