We don’t have the luxury of temperature monitoring on the old bikes but my bike being the 1VJ I have been keen to keep an eye on how she is running.
I have modified the airbox and changed to the under seat inlet, new oil pump is next on the list as well, but I was keen on keeping an eye on things like temperature sooner rather than later.





Fitting the Trail Tec is very simple, just some thermal paste (that was supplied) into the radiator slot, then insert the temperature probe.

Gives a good idea of how the bike is warming up and the radiator temp, this is obviously affected by air flow, so not a true reading of oil temp, oil temp at the tank is approximately ten degrees higher when moving but they equal out when the bike is stopped.

Oil tank temperature is monitored by an analogue oil filled filler cap gauge from KEDO.

Still quite cool in the UK at the moment, but off round Scotland in the summer so this adds a little piece of mind.

Nice idea. I like the simple tank cap. I do think it’s more of a mental state though as your legs are getting hotter in town in summer (June 20-July 10 ), and the bike is probably more at ease with it than we are. It’s the same as hearing all the taps and bumps when you forgot the earplugs. But I am a bit of a geek, so would enjoy building up a pattern of temp in different scenarios.

My oil tank cap's munted, so that's of interest, think I'veseen them before but might have ruled it out at £100+ . And having to look round and leave the side panel off to read it ...

No space for the spark plug sensor, I imagine, so I wonder if you could put a sensor in the alternator housing and route the wire through the grommet. Or bolt one to the cylinder head?

BTW, as of several years ago, Dave Lambeth was recommending removing the oil cooler altogether and running synthetic 10w40.
A bigger problem than the overheating, which I personally think doesn't happen unless you're at full revs in third with WOT in soft sand for extended periods in the Sahara, is the fact that the oil cooler remains open at all times and the oil doesn't get hot quickly enough.

It'd be good to experiment with a removable cover for the radiator or just fit a thermostatically controlled bypass.

Agreed Donny. Just an OCD worry thing, the bike is likely perfectly happy.

I don’t think I could cope without a radiator, a tad too much of a risk for me even with modern oil.
I use the gauge to see if I’m warmed up ok before going faster.
Just peace of mind.
