XT600E gear shifting

Hello Mates,

I am back in the family after a long break. Had a 3AJ which I regretfully sold, and now am back with a XT600E DJ02. This bike was made in 2000 and I'm the 5th owner. I had it for a month and enjoying it.

I have this issue with the gear shifter, and I wish to ask about it:

N -> 2 is harder than the rest of the gears, which are very smooth. I feel the shifter almost kicking back through the lever, and sometimes you hear the click.
N -> 1 sometimes does not latch - either returns to N as soon as I removes force, or else the N lamp turns off, but with a slight throttle it disengages immediately. I sometimes need to double clutch this to engage, and sometimes it is very smooth.

The previous owner told me that he changed the clutch just before selling it.

From your experience with these bikes, where could this be coming from?

I’d suggest, before spending much money, trying adjusting the clutch, on the bars and cable first, have a few rides and see if there’s any change. And I’d probably change the oil too if not done recently. After that I’d start from scratch with the clutch. But only after experimenting.
What’s it like going into gear with the engine off and pushing it about?
And what’s the gear change like (the ones that miss/jump out) with no clutch gear changes?
If that’s ok, should be sorted with clutch adjustments.
If that’s crap, then you may be looking deeper.
Also, is there anything you’ve not noticed, preventing full travel of the gear lever? Is it bent in a little and catching on the casing?
