Yes have read it,the little Honda crf 450 I've ridden at supermoto few times this year could do with an oil cooler as they hold bugger all oil...but I'm not going to be pinching the one of my tenere...

I for one am holding out to hear if the OP on the forum mentioned above gets an answer from the person who did the work.Yet I think that person (op) might/ought add some further information on what, why and so on (indeed if they have not already)
If I was an (Engineer/mechanic), I might find to give reason on the forum as to the whys and wherefores (but then one might not) and why should they?

Foot note; I note that the (ivj) srx has an oil cooler. I suspect mr Yamaha had no intention of this bike of traversing hotter climes such as North Africa.

Petrol Pump. What is the weight to this? along with the bits and bobs that go with it. And, How much does it pump out?

So the plot but simply thickens, coz we are pokin around in the dark, Untill?

Nought wrong with questions, Unless!

t'was i posting on the 'other' forum and it was my girlfriends bike. (hers is a lambeth prepped 1vj and mine is from moorespeed. + we have a standard one too. a back to back test soon!) anyway dave said they dont need either the oil cooler or fuel pump. im happy to believe the oil cooler (saying that, ive got a bigger one on mine) and not using the last half liter of fuel could be good as that is where all the debris will collect. unfortunately weve had other issues with my girfriends bike (various oil leaks) so we havnt had chance to use it much yet. anyway, weve asked him to replace the fuel pump. but i think were going to try it without the oil cooler. supposed to be going to south america on them at the end of the year, so lets see how they perform ....

Be interesting for sure in that heat (similar to OZ) did he give you the parts he removed from the bike? i don't mean to diss Dave as he certainly knows a shit load more than i do but the 1VJ`s were famous for engines getting to warm & i would have thought anything to help keep the engine cooler (like an oil cooler) should be left on especially where your going, hey what do i know?

You got to keep your old cooler and oil pump right?

I too was under the impression the 1vj had cooling issues, hence the redesign of the front end with the 3aj.

This is a interesting thread, and theres me thinking about fitting a bigger one when Dave lambeth recommends not having one at all.
I have seen the date but was there ever a response and a reason for why they were removed and why they are not needed. Ill be honest seems crazy to me.

Whaa!? Just read this thread.I can live with the removal of the fuel pump, odd though it seems but absolutely no way to doing away with the oil cooler.
Indeed the 1VJ had overheating issues. The 3 AJ had mods to address this.Low mudguard, larger cylinder cooling fins, improved oil pump and still had the oil cooler.
Even with the improved oil flow,I find it hard to believe that would compensate not having the O.C. An air/oil cooled bike is never going to benefit with this mod.
Belgrada Yamaha ran oversized factory oil coolers in the Dakar.Moorespeed sell oversized oil coolers for Tenere 600's in England.Perhaps the girlfriend who owns the bike would be advised to review her choice of mechanic...
