Another little question are the oil pumps pretty bullet proof on these? Whilst running I checked the pressure by unscrewing the bolt on top of the filter housing and it shot out 2 foot! Is this an adequate check or do I need to check the the pump also

The pump was changed on the next model (3AJ) to give 50% more oil flow around your engine, this pump continued on to the 3TB as it worked well.
You are able to retrofit any XT with the 3AJ pump, it has 3AJ on the casting so you know you have the right one.

50 percent better flow im definately going to look into that. Better flowing oil makes for a longer lasting engine.
Can I ask Mezo I bought this bike as it was in fairly good conditon. I know of the problems with this model over heating and weak 5th gear. Is there any common mods out there like the oil pump upgrade to mske the engine run cooler. Im wanting this bike for doing long trips on offroading and commuting so want it to be as reliable as possible
