After nearly 30 years I have just bought another Tenere. I have owned 20 odd bikes but that first Tenere was the pick of them. I won't say what I paid for my new baby- suffice to say the previous owner knew it was going to a good home.
Now with my first ( $2500 Australian on the road in 1984) I prettty much stripped it and had it set up as a long distance road tourer. With a 16 tooth front sprocket, low road bars, XS500 footpegs, crashbars with highway pegs and a screen it loped along at 120KPH for hour after hour in total comfort unlike anything else I've ridden. Now the new one is missing all the stuff I didn't even want on the first one. The big floppy front guard, equally big and floppy sidecovers, chain guard and oil cooler scoop. I am determined to bring this thing back to showroom condition but I can't find plastic for it anywhere. I have a workspop manual coming from New Zealand, Throttle cables from Germany and tank graphics from Italy but it has to have those daggy floppy panels to look right. Can anyone help? The other issue is the decompressor. There is no cable and the little lever thing on the head seems to be disconnected from the valve. I has heaps of compression and will be a bastard to start without a decompressor. Any tips on sorting this? I have some pics to share but this is my first crack at using a forum and I haven't worked out how to put them up- I just keep writing img. I'm glad to have found you lot. the challenge of restoring the old girl is a lot less daunting with you out there.

Hi Kim,lucky for you there is a fella in Bris who has just started reproducing all the plastic bits (side covers,oil cooler cover and head light) the front guard is still available and so are the rear ones,here's his email jrenehan@hotmail.com.You are in the right forum to rebuild the Tenere remember to ask heaps of questions before you start spending as we know the best places and prices.There is a section on here that show's you how to post pictures ie put them on photobucket then paste them etc.

Hey Kim like Eric says read everything first on here, use the search engine (top right) most subjects have been covered already.

The Restoration & Rebuild section has some nice 34L/39E rebuilds, download a copy of the parts fiche & workshop manual from the Hot Links section, buy your parts in bulk from each supplier to save on postage costs once you have totally stipped the bike down (important)

You can either powder coat or spray paint your frame its up to you (painting is cheaper) have all your metal parts galvanised to make it look brand new & professional.

Ask questions once you have started a rebuild thread, take lots of pictures (for your refrence when putting it back together) and for us lot to point out your mistakes, talking pictures,,,,there is a tutorial video made by myself in the Q & A section of the forum but basically set yourself up with a Photobucket accout & host your pics there, once you have hosted them at Photobucket you can insert them in your post.

We do not host pics on the forum to save on money/bandwidth, even myself does it this way.

Thanks for the advice and yes I am a bloke. stripping is challenging with rusty bolts.The Kiwi reproduction of the factory service manual (purple cover on ebay) is very clear and easy to follow. Well worth the cheap asking price.I'm not totally sure but I think my new $600 tenere (with distinctive chassis number 39E-001002) is the same one I bought new in Lismore nearly 30 years ago. Also I am on the Atherton Tableland, My profile says Brisbane for some reason.

It says Brisbane as thats what the IP address gave as your location, its easy enought to change in your profile.

Spoke with Jon yesterday about the plastics, they are about to be shipped any day now so about a month away, he has white or blue sets of plastics in case you fancied the euro look (blue/white/yellow).
