Crazy flashers......

Post by GeoffD »

Got a strange problem with my 1VJ........

This particular 1VJ is fitted with a 3TB engine, wiring harness, stator, etc,etc....

So, the bike wasn't charging, I traced the fault to an open circuit in the red wire coming from the voltage reg.
Repaired the fault & the bike is now charging, however while the engine was running I switched the indicators
on & the engine cut out... once the engine was stopped the indicators flashed, started the engine up & the indicators
stopped again, however if I operate the brake light or switch the lights on, the flashers start again.

Everything works perfectly with the engine stopped.
Does the 3TB require a special flasher unit? ... on this bike there is a 3 wire plug, one is live, one is the load wire, ie
going to the switch & the other is an earth wire.

On a normal 3 pin flasher unit the 3 connections are X for live, L for load & P is the warning lamp.... that's not the
case on this bike..... I'm using a 2 pin flasher unit.... it all points to an earth fault..... but, before I pull it apart I
wonder if anyone knows the answer?
The future is not what it used to be....

First up, the flasher is a conventional 3 wire flasher. Nothing special.

The outer case of the voltage regulator is the main ground for the system beside the battery negative.
You must have a good connection from the reg. case to the frame and the negative terminal of the battery.
Running an extra wire is a good idea and will improve the charging. :funkynanna:

Hi Dave

This is the only 3 wire flasher system I've seen on any of my bikes, including Tenere 2 which has got the same 3TB system, if you plug a conventional 3 pin flasher unit into the loom the unit gets very hot & the main fuse blows..... one thing I have uncovered tonight is that the flasher system on German bikes is different to UK bikes.... & this wiring harness did come from Germany.... to wire this bike as a UK bike, ie 2 pin flasher unit I'll have to ground out all the black wires on the indicator lamps..... I think
The future is not what it used to be....

OK, I will have to put my thinking cap on.
I am in Wisconsin USA at the moment, heading to the Oshkosh experimental aircraft show and fly in,
so I don't have access to my reference library. :book:
