South African rebuild of a XTZ 750

Good going so far Charlie. I've also knocked a hole in my pocket.

I'm also rethinking my logic about this whole kicker business. I was fighting fit and 22 when I last owned a kicker - I'm now 40, diabetic, over weight and so unfit even my postbox by the gate is out of range. Might sell the bastard before it kills me.

The worst part about doing this rebuild is that i will get a few hours in, then i have to go to work for the day, or go shopping for groceries, or do some chore or other around the house. I just wish i could have a few good clean days of just doing my bike. Seems like the daily grind is doing its best to trip me up

So anyways, over the week end i did manage to get the tank sorted. I painted on the paint stripper and sat back and waited.


then after some serious scraping and cleaning, 4 hours later i had found the tank has a bit of a ding in it on the top right had side


And yet again i had to head off to school to watch the sprog play hockey. A few days later i get a gap and sneak off into the garage and find that the tank has started to grown red fuzz.... So out comes the sand paper and two hours later she is clean again. a quick squirt of primer and bob's your aunty.



I will have to sand the dent area back down to metal again before i apply the filler putty. But for now at least the tank is protected. I have had a look at the swing arm and the crash bars, but so far they seem to be unaffected by any rusty growths.

Thank god it's a public holiday tomorrow. I get to spend a day uninterrupted on to bike . A mate of mine and his missus came round for a coffee and a look see how I am progressing with the rebuild. He also mentioned that he knows this fella in town with an old XT 500 that just might be willing to part company with it. No papers to go with it though. Damn, but it is so bloody tempting to have a heap of project bikes lined up to pull them back from the grave. I subtly mentioned the idea to the wife,but she told me to shut up .... Quite rude I thought.

What color are you doing the frame. Powder coat or paint?

Sound like restoring can cost relationships.

Its good to know that I'm not the only person "who thinks more of their bilke than me" unquote!

Bikes don't nag, and they never complain when you want to ride them either.
