Wow - it looks very genuine - the only thing I can think of is that Yamaha may have used the last of the 1VJ frames when starting the 3AJ production line. Either way an interesting bike and rare. Enjoy..Charlie

Check to see which airbox the bike has fitted, the 1VJ intakes were at the front of the box (above the cylinder head) which caused the engine to run hotter as it was sucking in hot air. On the 3AJ the intake for the box was at the rear (between your legs) so remove the seat & see if the intake snorkel is there.

It's definitely a later 3AJ.... no way it can have a 1VJ frame... there's tons of differences....
I say it's a ringer.

Actually having studied your photo of the headstock and compared it to my 1VJ and 3AJ frames I have here i would say it's DEFINITELY a ringer... the frame number has been altered (badly)
