Oiltemp. sensor on 1VJ

Hi there!
I have been looking after a good solution to read the oil temperature of my bike (Tenere 1VJ) since I bought it a year ago. I have experienced some overheating problems in the summer by extreme conditions (35ºC and stuck in traffic for 40min...) and since it is quite a common thing on the 1VJ´s I decided to install something to have that peace of mind.
I found a TrailTech sensor that can be plugged into the radiator hose, price is about 65 euros which seems reasonable and it comes with all the hardware that is needed. It is available for 16,19,22 and 25mm inner diameter of the hose and I am not really sure which is the correct one for the tenere. I brought the bike to the workshop for some maintenance work so I can´t really check it right now.

If anyone knows the measurement of the inner diameter of the hose that goes to the radiator I would very much appreciate it!

None are correct because it is air cooled (not water cooled) there is no radiator.

You are right Mezo, I meant the Oil cooler not the radiator... As I said I want to have control over the oil temperature.

I had an oil tank (from a 34L) which somebody had fitted a temperature sender on, they had drilled a hold & brazed a nut the same size as the sender thread, the oil tank is the most suitable place to measure oil temperature as that is where the oil is held (dry sump)

From reading TrailTech now do oil sensor (they never used to) it was water temp & then a stupid sensor that wedged between the cooling fins on the cylinder head & that only really measured the outside temperature of your engine not the inside temperature of your oil.

Now they seem to sell a oil senders & the adaptor bung M12x1.5 which you could braze on to the oil tank (importantly at the bottom).

Really interesting in the solution, tried to make oil pressure sensor and oil gauge systems but both solutions wont successful due to several reason.

The one solution you mentioned seems to be the better one I guess, as in the oiltank really is the most of the oil so the temperature reading can be the most accurate... I think I am going to try that out and see how that performs :)

Pressure reading is I guess more complicated right? how did you try that out, and why didn´t that work?

Knowing your bike is overheating & knowing the history of the 1VJ for overheating why not engineer a solution? you already said you get stuck in traffic on 35°C+ days for a long time, so knowing its going to get hot anyway a gauge is not going to help it cool down.

Why not fit an big FAN ASSISTED OIL COOLER they also use these on auto transmission gearboxes.

You could have a simple switch on your handlebar to switch it on when your stuck at the traffic lights or your could wire it through a thermostat to come on automatically.

Kedo in Germany stock 2 different types of oil cooler kits, with an oil thermostat as well. That sounds to me like the best solution, given the known overheating issues of the 1VJ.

Attaching my piloting project for oil pressure gauge below. The solution works perfectly until oil was too warm and during engine idling diode blinks.
btw. I agree that oil thermostat (having one on the bike) and larger oil radiator (having another one too) helps. Perhaps would be good idea to replace standard radiator with front oil radiator like from XR650L (part code 15600-KCY-671). Easiest way is to install fan as per suggestion above

I am taking that in consideration for sure. Its the best solution, no doubt, the only thing that I am worried about is to not be able to pass the technical inspection once I have done it. Here in Spain it is either small modifications (handlebars-mirrors-footpegs....) or you need to do a specific inspection that costs 1k only to be able to pass...

I think I am going to try the oil temp gauge, just to have an eye at any time and check out if overheating is really an issue in my bike, because I have already improved the faulty intake of my 1VJ and let it similar as in the 3AJ. Lets see if using good quality oil, avoiding traffic as much and having an eye on the temperature is enaough for my conditions, if not then I am going for the fan and bigger oil cooler:)
