I thought some more about your problem last night............

At idle, with the throttle closed the engine is drawing in fuck all air.
If the air cleaner was blocked or having no air cleaner was enough to effect the idle mixture, then engine would struggle to run over 1/4 throttle and be hopelessly rich. So move on and check something else.

I know you guys in QLD rarely have to use the choke and expect to jump on a bike and gas it right of the mark. Down here in the colder climes, the use of choke and warming the engine for a few minutes before riding makes a big difference.

it had an aftermarket foam air filter and it fell apart so i'll have to wait, i'll warm it up and have a fiddle see if i can get it to idle, would i be able to balance the carbs if it will only idle on the choke?

You could do a basic balance, using the blunt end of a drill bit under the butterflys or wind the tickover screws right out & listen to the butterflys shut as you release the throttle.

Have you remembered to set your air screws?

yep followed the manual, 2.5 turns out for the air screws/idle mixture screws, these work up till 3000rpm, and i also followed the settings for the butterfly's

it might have something to do with consuming too much

Had a look at how your carbs are linked, listening method wont work, sorry.

Hey Dan, whilst out and about this weekend, I went to a Euro Classic car and bike show in our city and came across this bike which made me think of yours, so I took a couple of photos.

very nice i think i'll have to get some of those engine guards/bars, if/when i drop it i would like the fairings to be protected, it's getting hard to find good one's and it's going to take a shit load of work to sort mine out

back to wheels the budget won't stretch for the new spokes and relace so i cleaned and painted the spokes and hubs

i will do the spokes down the track but for now a paint job will get me on the road and i can sell my BMW e30 and i'll have some cash to spend on all the bikes

Good catch with the Muffler,and I have just got some of those wider pegs for XT 550-1.I'm in the same boat as you Dan, riding is for more important.I think I am going to get some rubber mounted flashers for mine, as I have busted two already(thats what you get for putting your bike on a bucket instead of a stand). Looking Good though Dan!

i had a go at mounting the can, i just can't seem to get it "just right" i want it to follow the same angle of the side panel
might have to adjust/modify the mounting bracket
