Issues with new 3rd party stator from ebay for xtz660

Post by kissedin »

Bought this and thought it would be a fairly easy installation on my XTZ660 (1998):https://www.ebay.com/itm/233170240197?_ ... %3A2334524

Got it today but ... the harness has two rubber boots (my old one only had one) and the ground cable layout is different. Also the harnes is much longer than my original one. The seller on ebay claims the part number should be 3yf81410 which is right according to my parts diagram. (But he also says the part numer is 4DN-81410-00-00)

Has anyone tested these stators and can confirm that they'll work (after some tweaking with lenght, ground and removing one rubber boot) and will not fry my electrical system? I would like to make sure before I install it! smile:

Any help greatly appreciated!

Just do the mods and fit it, at the end of the day it was less than $50 so if it doesn't work just toss it in the bin. :rtfi:

Cheap Chinese regulators are more likely to fry your bikes electrics than a simple stator.

What you have bought is a generic chinese made stator that fits a number of Yamaha models including XT600e/ TT600e etc. They make the loom long so it will fit other bikes that need the length. I bought one couple years ago, was $30 US delivered from china from aliexpress and installed it into an XT. Fitted ok and worked with a bit of fiddling around. Will it last as long as genuine quality item? Likely not as the coils are not fully varnished/ sealed after they are wound like the genuine part so may not like being soaked in hot oil as readily in the long term. I havnt used that bike much and probably wont ever take it far from home so cant really say is good or bad but for the price you cant complain!

Well. Work is in progress now. But I need to order molex terminal crimps.

I did drop the seller a mail mentioning that the harness needs modification in order to work on my bike. Even if the price is low they should not say that it fits a xtz660 when it actually doesn't.

Thanks for your answers!

Would it be a good or bad idea to clear coat the stator with 2pac? (In order to make it more durable.)

Hi, no dont use 2 pac. If you do want to spend a bit of time to improve the stator then google insulating varnish. May be able to buy small tin or even spray can.

Personally...

I would send it back & buy the correct one, imagine being stuck in the middle of nowhere in the pissing down rain 'cos your stator's packed up again..... :banghead:

Now it is installed.

What I did was:
Cut the cables to appropriate length (used oem one for reference)

Used molex extractor in order to re use old plug for hall-sensor (plug with two connectors).

Crimped new terminal crimps to wires (6,3 mm 2,5 mm dia and 2,8 mm 1,5 mm dia crimps are used). (Ground wire can be re-used.)

Changed to insex screws (because the original philips-screws is a pia to work with if you ask me).

And voila she runs just fine - no more stalling and hesitation at low revs or random misfires.

I'll let you know if stator quality is poor. So far I have only traveled a few kms.
