Fuel tap fun

When I first bought the bike I ran out of gas totally with no reserve...so new fuel pump and I discovered the old favourite of the 'ON' fuel inlets having fallen off. I bought a new LH original tap but as we know the rear facing RH tap is NLA.

As I found myself with lots of time after being tested positive for Covid, no symptoms, I faced the quest of seeing if the on pipes/filters were in the tank.

Being a large chap my hand doesn't fit in the hole and my 10 year old is away for the holidays....

By turning the tank upside down and shaking up and down vigorously one came out but the second is proving very illusive, I have tried the tank the right way up and tweezering it out via the fuel tap holes but no go.

I have a 40cm long 4 prong gripper thing which gripped it once before it returned to the abyss, I am also concerned about scrapping off any internal protection? After more reciprocal motion it is no longer audibly ratting around so for now reassembly and await to see if 10 year old hands are small enough.

Interestingly I notice that the new superseded part (3JN-24500-10) has a shorter ON pipe meaning slightly less reserve.

Now to put in a litre or two to check the bloody pump still works.

I wonder if any of you bright chaps may have a technique worth trying to remove the remaining pipe?

Edit: shock the pump works with 2 litres in the tank, wasn't happy with 1 litre but I think that was in the corners Infront and therefor below the taps.




I really hate removing the rear mudguard to remove the toolbox to get to the pump, I know it's only a few bolts but seems such a PITA.

I did use my workshop endoscope to see where the remainig fuel intake was, and was able to push it towards the tank opening.

On the other hand, any 1VJ right hand tap does not even have a reserve position :-)

Wow hadn't thought of that but although it looks like good value at €80 I can't think of anything else I would do with it.

After searching I see ones that plug into a phone....

OMG makes a RH fuel tap, part code is 01Z3314224. Made in Italy, not chinese crap off eBay that breaks after a couple of rides (ask me how i know). I've fitted one to my 3DS and it works fine.

I have my old pump somewhere and I have found a repair kit, that costs nearly as much as a new pump:

More interestingly I see mounting brackets so I could perhaps relocate the pump for easier access.

I take the pumps off & pipe direct to the tank.... if I was going somewhere where there was limited fuel stations I might fit one. For the sake of a litre or two of petrol I can't be bothered with the extra problems the pump can cause.

Hadn't thought of that but given reserve with original taps is 3.1, not having the last few litres means virtually no reserve.

For the last two years I've been using the trip anyway, 5,5l per 100km or Brit 51mpg.
