choke lever position

Post by Andymann »

Hi All -

The previous owner of my bike had fitted a non-standard choke cable and drilled a hole in the dash surround. It seemed like a logical place to have it, but I did find it strange that Yamaha never built in a support for the plastic surround. Nevertheless I ordered a entire new choke cable and choke mechanism but couldn't get a mounting bracket (which I thought might go under the dash surround for support) because it's discontinued. When the cable arrived it was way too short to ever make it to the dash surround, which got me thinking that maybe it was meant to be mounted somewhere else.

Some Googling and there are two possible places - some people say on the handlebars (no 4 in the schematic) and others says where the tank is screwed down on the top of the frame. For now I made a SS bracket and put it on the handlebars and it works well, but it does seem odd that they would mount the choke on something that can move, the cable does pull tight on full-lock. My TRX850 has the choke mounted on the side near the tank which seems a lot more logical and tells me that maybe it should be on the tank mount.

Can anyone perhaps confirm where the standard mounting position is?

Thanks!

So there we have it - complete with odd blue mudguard that I actually don't think looks too bad.

Not a restoration, just a few small key things done so that I can start to really enjoy it.
