Hi. Still having problems with a 1vj in red. Bought as none runner having been sat in a barn for 10 years. It was fitted with non standard stator and ecu and did not run. Engine checked and all ok and carbs cleaned and checked. New correct stator and proper 1vj ecu purchased and fitted. I get a spark and i believe it to be timed correctly as when i fitted new sprag clutch i checked flywheel. I get a spark and when starter motor pressed it fires for 1 second and stops. If i try again it does the same. Fuel looks to be getting to plug. This is driving me mad as the rest of the bike is is in very good condition. I left it with a local bike dealer to sort out last september but was then ill for several months. When i checked on progress he said he had not got around to it but due to it being left outside during the day all winter i got pissed off with him so took it home. He told me he got it ticking over but the timing moved the wrong way if throttle opened due to incorrect stator . the reason i changed it. Now i cannot get it to even tick over. All parts checked and show correct ohms.
I am getting to the point of selling as a non runner which would be a shame as i really love this bike. any thoughts? thanks in advance.

Are you sure you have correct stator and CDI for the 1VJ ?
The 1VJ stator looks like this:


And the IVJ case should look like this:

If you engine case looks like this it's a later 3TB type with TCI:

That's the later different type of stator and different TCI or digital CDI as it's known.
Motorang gives a thorough explanation if you use the search bar at the top for TCI.

Just a thought, are you sure the two large square starting circuit relays are in the correct positions?
I had hours of fun with this. One's normally open and the other is normally closed but there's no visual way of checking if the writing has disappeared. You need to check with multimeter, or just swap them over. Nothing will get damaged, but some odd things can happen.
I'd 100% check this before messing about with anything else.

And from an engineering perspective check the simple stuff first before assuming disaster
So I'd be looking for continuity from the red starter button at the wire ends, I've seen good initial contact which drops and also very high resistances due to dirt and corrosion.

thanks for all info and help so far. stator and ecu both correct for 1vj (to the best of my knowledge. checked relays and now working my way through wiring and earths. Fires when i press button but cuts when i release button????

The bike is definitely a vj1.

Can you short out (bypass) the “run” switch, then try or bypass the starter button or kick her.

Away for a few days and first job is to check all the earth's and ecu connections. If that fails I will give the bypass idea a go.cheers
