I was putting together an engine for me xt600 in the winter and I needed a cam shaft and the cam gear.
So I bought one on eBay cam/gear for 25 nikka, but when I put the head on and tried align the timing marks with the flywheel I couldn't get it right. When I got to tdc on the the flywheel it rolled over when the I tried to align the lines on the gear, not to mention there was one dot at the top of the cam gear and three 180 degrees opposite??
So after after a bit of investigation through looking at the parts lists' on CMSL I came up with the idea that the cams are all the same and interchangable, but the cam gear are different from the early model xt's to the later ones.
So I bought an xt600 cam gear with only one dot on the cam gear believing it to be an earlier model, (I was clutching at straws at this point).
Hey Presto, low and behold it timed up perfectly!
From the pics I'll add you cam see the difference in the cam gears being half a tooth out.
Now thinking about this I put it down to emissions regulations on the later models as I know the had a few less hp, and using a cam gear from a electric model rather than a kicker.
What are your thoughts boys?
