The first order of business was the wash the bike and see what it looked like with the side cover and fairing on and all that...
The first hurdle that I came across was that the inner support for the fairing was not fitting where I thought it should go. Also, the tabs on the front of the gas tank looked to be bent outward and I determined that the nuts welded on the frame were probably supposed to be on the inside of the little box and not the outside. My solution was to first cut off the welded on nuts and smooth things down to the correct width. Then I turned down some nuts to make them round. I drilled out holes in the old ones once were and then inserted and welded in the new nuts and I think it's going to work just fine!
After sitting a few years, I am hoping this bike will come back to life with a new battery, a carb cleaning and a few other little things. I have built many bikes over the years and I am torn between leaving this one cosmetically as it is or doing a refresh, but for now, I am leaning toward getting it running and having some fun on it for a bit and then deciding how far I am going to go. Since I am in the states, I'm sure I will need some help sourcing some parts and finding help along the way so I am glad to have found this community! And a big THANKS to ScottieH for entrusting me with the bikes. And to my friend Laurens in the Netherlands for pointing me in this direction. Laurens is working on a 1VJ as well which I am glad about because I have a feeling this bikes are going to take a village!
so I bought 2 "cafe racer tail hoops" on Amazon for $14 each and decided to make my own dual headlight, Baja kind of setup. I also swapped out an Acerbis fender I had laying around for the small KTM looking thing and I am much happier! I had not realized how much vibration was coming from the fairing but it was SUBSTANTIAL. The bike rides much nicer now also so the fairing will become a wall hanger.
