Oil not circulating around the engine

Post by kevingrahambutler »

I got my engine back last week I put it in the bike I fill it with oil primed it the way mezo told me to 1 ltr in the left side case, fill oil tank, remove bleed screw above oil filter kick it over with out spark plug in, till oil comes out of bleed screw,,,,,,,,no oil,,,,,
I took the side casing off, I've checked the small oils seal and ball bearing that's fine as I replaced it,
What else do I need to check as I'm running out of options

Since you must fill the oil filter cavity, it will take LOTS of kicking. I usually just start it. Even then it takes a bit to fill and oil out the bleed. If you do it this way just loosen the bleed screw and leave it in place or you will have lots of oil squirting around. Oil will come around the threads under pressure.

Stev I've kicked that bike till I'm blue in the face so I started the bike three times and let it run for a few seconds, I'm concerned that with no oil in there things may start grinding, still no oil, I'm thinking I may after take the oil pump off to inspect it, I've got another engine I can pinch a pump off but I would like to make sure it's the pump before I start to strip it down,
I loosened the oil feed to the engine to make sure the oil is running into the engine and it is, I'll leave it till tomorrow before I start again as I'm fucking sick now

Hi Graham... this is the post I was telling you about.....

OIL PUMP BLEEDING......

By kickstarting or using the starter will not work. On the older XT / Tenere models the suction hose from oil tank to pump inlet is simply too long.
1. When reassembling the engine, leave clutch off.
2. When engine is installed in the frame, do not tighten the bolts on the flange of the hose
3. Pour oil into oiltank
4. Wait till oil appears at the flange (this is called leaking)
5. Tighten flange bolts
6. Turn oil pump by hand (in the correct direction ...) till oil comes out of the discharge hole. Pump is now primed (the oil has passed the pump, no air in suction line)
7. Assemble clutch and r/h cover.
8. Pray and start.
9. Only when engine has caught loosen the bleed screw on the oil filter, let out the air till oil shows

This operation is only necessary when the suction hose has been emptied, so not needed after a normal oil change.
The future is not what it used to be....

I don't know if you got it by now or not but on mine I take an oil squirt can filled with 15w or 20W oil and fill the oil lines and down the filter bleed screw to fill everything up before starting. It gets the pump pretty good filled and is able to do it just seconds before starting. I also keep the 2 valve inspection ports off on the head and squirt a bunch of oil over everything just before starting , then some as it is running to make sure there is lube up there till things get fully primed. The heavier oil helps seal and prime .

The assembly paste you smeared over the cam and journals can handle the lubing for a bit till oil pressure builds , you did use the paste right ?

I got sick of waiting for the tool and took the clutch basket off using a clamp, the pump didn't have any resistance, when I took the pump off the cog was just spinning as the pump has seized, I had a spare pump so that's fitted and put back together I kick it over a few times and oil start to pump through, it's 9pm and Its pitch black, I'm hoping to get a few hours this week to get the engine started and the bike put together, relief is the word that comes to mind,
And thank you to Geoff for pointing me in that direction, I would have changed the pump to the 3aj but time is short I may end up taking a spare we'll see or am I just been over zealous,

I started the bike this evening oil pumping around the engine sounded very nice, I set the bike up when it was running off the choke on the side stand it idols at about 1500 Very sweet.
I take the bike off the side stand and it's straight the revs go to 2500, I've check the throttle cables that's fine,
If I set the bike to run at 1500 when it's straight then put it on its side stand it will stall, the carbs are newly rebuilt,
I set the carbs up when I rebuilt them so I don't want to mess with it till I've tried other things first,
Has anyone had this happen, if so what did you do to remedy the problem
Thanks
G
