1986 tenere a few questions

Hello I was told that the early tenere suffers from overheating problems and was told to remove the snorkel to let air flow over the engine
And there's a problem with the bolts holding the cylinder head and need to be helicoiled as the bolt are not long enough as the bike needs some bit done was so off road for winter

I wouldn't stress about it, in all the years we have been running this forum ive yet to see or hear about a 1VJ overheating.
If you are using the bike for city commuting it may get a tad warm stationary at traffic lights but once your moving again it will cool off.

We run 1VJ`s here in Australia & it gets proper hot down here (40+) and still no reports of overheating, but yes they did cock up in regards to the airbox on the 1VJ where the intake was at the front of the bike & the next model (3AJ) the intake was moved the rear of the airbox.

Just make sure you change the oil regularly & keep it topped up (not overfilled) and you should be right, i used to run my Ducati 900 in & out of London daily & i could feel when it was getting warm, on the odd occasion i would switch it off at the lights.

Whats the worse that can happen? you may semi seize it on a warm day & then its a top end overhaul, at some stage it will need one anyhow.

I've heard that you can install an oil cooler mounted to the frame and install the 3AJ oil pump as well to help reduce concern of overheating. The 3AJ pump alone cycles about 50% more oil than the 1VJ.

I own many xt600 43F engines which are very similar to the 1VJ minus the electric start, and despite my best efforts to overheat the bastard, it still runs. That said i don't recommend trying to drive steep hills on gravel and sand with a full load immediately after a full day of highway miles. Last time i did that I could smell the engine starting to get hot with the extra effort and no airflow.

No that`s wrong Scottie, the 3AJ pump flows 50% more than the 34L/55W early kicker motors, but the 1VJ had an "in between" pump that flowed more than the 34L`s but not as much as the 3AJ`s & is marked with the letters 1VJ.
