Late 3AJ would be the best one, if it already has that external oil line outside the engine. Still CDI then.

Re: 1vj gearbox problems
Hi thanks for replys. I found a gear cluster on usa ebay from a yam grizzly atv i think so risked it would fit and ordered it. the very expensive custom fees of the uk put the price to £230 oh that was also with the later oil pump. anyway the parts arrived they are like brand new no pitting its the later output shaft so has the nut and washer gearbox sprocket so looks good.Am going to start biulding engine up this morning as have been side tracked with powder coating frame/rebiulding wheels etc. hoping i dont come up against any problems. so again thanks for replys.hambone.

Re: 1vj gearbox problems
I have a feeling the 3TB trans output shaft is slightly longer. This would cause your counter sprocket to be misaligned with rear sprocket. Think this is the issue when installing a 3TB engine into the earlier drum brake rear XT's....but I may be wrong and will all fit no worries!
See here what was done to fit 3TB engine into a 34L regarding the counter sprocket mod he performed. May assist you if have same issue?

Re: 1vj gearbox problems
Hi all. Update on gearbox marathon. So got the later gear cluster fitted biult up the crankcase halves came to clutch and the center boss is different it has six splines on 1vj and 12 splines on the later engine. So bought a boss from a guy in australia wich came yesterday. today is biulding day. Have seen a post on here that says output shaft is longer than 1vj mine looks a tad short.have had a straight edge on sprockets and it could do with mybe 3mm further out. am going to see how it develops. Just one other thing when rebiulding top end the gudgeon pin seemed to have a fair bit of rock on it i thought it was little end bush wear but is no bush. so have carried on regardless will find out when it stasts up. to be honest could not face a cranck rebuild at moment. So bye for now hambone.

Re: 1vj gearbox problems
sounds like the little ends shagged, the problem is, when you open up one of these older motors you can be opening a can of worms. Count the teeth on the gear at back of the clutch.
