Will a 3AJ Barrel fit a 1VJ

I finally have decided to cure my 1VJ starting issues.

After a lot guess work and some basic trouble shooting I believe that the 100 PSI compression test is causing the starting issues from a worn barrel.

I have replaced the rings, re-lapped the valves and tested them.

I didnt think the barrel looked that bad but running out of options so biting the bullet for rebore with new piston.

I do have a spare 3AJ barrel on a standard bore so my question is - WILL IT FIT A 1VJ?

Something in the back of my mind says the 1vj studs are differnt to the 3AJ?

I dont want to drop the 1VJ engine then wait for the rebore - I would prefer to do the work all on the same day.

The cylinder should fit on the engine block. You can fit an old 34L barrel and 34L head to a 3AJ block if you really wanted to, but you need to match a 34L head to a 34L cylinder, and a later pattern head to a later pattern cylinder.

The real question is will a 1VJ head fit on a 3AJ cylinder, to which the answer is I don't think so.

And this is the 3AJ head diagram. Check out the head gasket differences. That little dangler off the end of the 3AJ head gasket by the cam chain passageway is the only difference I recognize.



I vaguely remember using 3AJ head gaskets on my 43F and that little dangle would hang out the edge of the cylinder and be fine, but I don't have any good evidence of that...

Have you had your head and cylinder tested for warpage? That could cause a head gasket leak. Head bolts stretch, valve seats can wear out, valves could be pitted, or your barrel could need a rebore as you suspect.

Interestingly my 1VJ barrel does not have any markings on it other than the 595cc - the valves not pitted, new head gasket and base gasket fitted - but you raise and interesting point on the tag which I do have. Perhaps I have fitted a 3AJ gasket set rather than that of 1VJ but I do not know if that would cause me a problem? Apart from teh head gasket I see no mating differences but as you say bolt length and therefore depths may have changed. And I see that the gasket sets are sold as 3AJ 2kf XT600e and the 1VJ is sold seperately.

I reckon I will strip the 1VJ engine it and go for the rebore and check as you said the head gasket suface for warping.

Thanks again Scottieh, quite right 3AJ double fixing at CAM side.

Found a couple of 1VJ barrels to take me forward.

Interestingly 1 of the cylinders ......the Cylinder Sleeve appears to be a tight sliding fit such that a heavy push slides it out.

Should I KEEP or SCRAP - what are the views :-)?????
