As on years before the Ténéré saga was connected to the Dakar rally, in 1986-87 Yamaha used integral fairings on their racing bikes. With the 1988 3AJ model many successful upgrades where made to correct the misfortunes of the 1VJ. An Integral front fairing with twin headlights, lowered the front guard (hugger style) to improve the airflow to the engine, a new rear brake system was introduced (2KF caliper and disc), the kick start was no longer installed. Gear and oil temperature issues where no longer a problem as the oil flow was changed and a more powerful oil pump was designed giving 50% more flow.

A similar looking bike was produced locally in Brazil, the main difference to the standard 3AJ was the lack of the rear disc brake and was manufactured as a drum brake bike. (In 1988 the similar 1VJ looking bike was also built locally 2TY) it came also in both color schemes.
