Need to scrap rim?

I expect that I know the answer to this, but is there any chance of straightening this front rim, and if so, any suggestions about how/where to get it done?



It'd be nice to not have to get a new rim laced onto the hub if it wasn't beyond recovery, it looks bad to me, but I know bugger all about these things nowadays.

The rear rim seems OK, missing a few spokes though.



Besides which, I saw some comments that rims need to be drilled differently for the XT hubs, does anyone know anything about that?

While I'm asking stupid questions, will 90/90/21 front tyres that they say require a 1.85" rim mount safely on the XT's 1.6" rim, anyone know? Not many tyres state less than 1.85" rim from what I can see.

I know some people have hammered out dents with a hammer & heat

There are companys that straighten cast ally wheels by rolling out dents, I'd do a google search & ask one of them.

I guess it depends on what sort of job you want? if your going to keep it long term & do a full frame up resto then get your hubs powdercoated, new rims & stainless spokes.

You wont know anything till you get the tires off & look inside, they may have the alloy cancer in which case they are bin jobbies. Have a read through Just Dan`s 34L resto & you can see wheat i mean, he got some of them aftermarket rims from Thailand.

Im pretty sure you can still get new gold DID rims from Japan.

The question was basically "does this look OK, or can it be fixed or need to be replaced?"

Whether I keep the bike long term or not, it's never going to get a "proper" restoration, any repairs or modifications will be purely related to getting it running properly/well, I have no interest in having something that looks just like what it did when it was made, only in how well it goes.

If I have to replace the rim, I'll get something wider that takes the current tyres better.

Well in that case mate try bashing it with a big hammer.

Im not joking, if you can get is straight that will do fine & perfectly safe, or get a secondhand one off the bay.
But yep half hour round here & id get that working with my big persuasive device.

Ive bashed a few moto X rims back in to shape over the years no problem.

I should add Neale, use a rubber mallet if you have one? or put a bit of soft wood in between.
