My 98 bike is due a its first service since Ive had it, which oil do you recommend and are genuine Yamaha filters the way to go? Thanks in advance.

Any good semi synthetic 20-50 will do, I always use Yamaha filters

I use mineral oil, but I change it pretty fast, at 3000-3500 km. But I do a lot of offroad riding, occasionally even some abuse on motocross tracks. Until now I used JMC and Motul 3000, both 20w50.
If I would go more on paved roads I would use semi synthetic oil, 10w40 in cold weather and 15w50/20w50 in the summers.

I use semi synthetic 10/40.
It gives better warm up protection than 20/50 & being liquid cooled your engine doesn't get as hot as an air cooled 600.
