Bernieboy's 34l Resto

Post by Bernieboy »

:confetti: I have finally found time to start my first official resto. For those of you that can remember Mezo offered one his stable ("who would swap a Tenere for a caravan"!!!) Actionman and I went on a combined "outback ride" with a visit to Mezo ,Dan Trish and Tentere in early September.
Mezo had already partialy dismantled his fleet and we spent some time collecting the parts from '620'

Managed to gather all the parts and cram them on to the trailer with the 2 1vjs

Image

While Biney kept the chicks under control!!! :hss: (No animals where injured in the production of this post!)

I have ordered a number of parts for the resto, front guard, rear guard, master cylinder, carb kit, front calliper kit, pack rack, headlight cowl, sprokets and chain. Next is to start on the motor. Mezo had not ever run the motor, it is as is with out any real history, so last Friday went down to the Actionman cave and we took to top off.

Also bought a USB endoscope from Ebay ($12!!!!) this is to look in the gearbox and 5th gear etc, with out having to split the crackcase. It is also very handy for some back yard gynocology or even looking up your our arse should you be bored :sherlock: It has its own on board LED illumination and can take videos or stills.

Some carbon build up around the valve seats

A poor phone camera shot down the bore(some wear and som verticle scoring (the bore is std and not yet rebored)
Image

Got the head barrel and rocker box blasted (thankyou Action man)

Image

Then a quick hone. You all be thinking why aren't you doing a re bore? Well this is a bit of a test to demonstrate the Actionman philosophy that to many re-bores are done when only new rings and a hone will give you many more happy miles :star: The piston is worn but still meets the Yam spec. The gugeon is badly worn but the big and small ends are both ok (new gudgeon on the way from USA!)

Image

Some of my parts have arrived (you will see I have already fitted the Yamaha cover to the "copy" mastercylinder yet to be painted)

Image

Next to be attacked was the carby. It had been filled with some very stale petrol and both slides were siezed.

Image

Some hours later (in fact a few nights) I have managed to fully clean and rebuild, using alot of patients and an Aldi Dremel.

Next was to set the float level..... had 3 goes on the bench to get it to the 7mm specification.

Image

With the fading light I had left, I peeled the old tyre from the front rim. Generaly good shape but did discover some of the dreaded wheel cancer around the valve stem hole !!!. Will get stuck into it with a wire brush to see how deep it goes!! Have to wait till next weekend .

Image

Big box from Germany arrived to night.

Yes 2 front guards (one for Actionman)

Stay tuned, I am waiting on a new gudgeon to reasseble the top end. :popcorn2:

The left is unavailable Bernie in any colour. :sadnanna:

This is how it works with side panels, if it ends with a 1X it means blue & if it ends with a 2X it means white.

So your chasing a RH side panel 34L-21721-00-2X (side panel-1 is the left side & side panel-2 is the right side)

Here are the front guards 34L-21510-30 indecently how to tell the colour with these is the blue ends in 20 & the white in 30 & its blue im chasing blue which is no longer available. :sadnanna:

And as for the headlight cowling, none left in any colour, Eric (bless him) nicked the very last one, having said that there will be NOS stuff sitting on some dusty old Yamaha dealers shelf somewhere in the world. :sherlock:

So Bernieboy, best you start knocking out the headlight cowling & LH side panel molds first.

Interestingly Bernie, the wiring harness 34L-82590-00 is available €120 with a superseded number 50T-82590-20 and yes with the rubber boots according to the fiche on this site.

Hmmm, shiny new plugs.
