What's this wire on battery?

Post by Windmill John »

Afraid I'm going to be a bit vague here, just hope someone can offer guidance!

Just putting things back on the bike; 1VJ
There is a connector to the positive and one to the negative terminal. Negative is spliced into the main negative lead; looks very genuine.

But... the lead going to the positive terminal.... first it is black... then it goes to a chocalate block with two blacks coming out!....

Vague like I said....

Okay, if I connect an ohmmeter to that lead going to the positive terminal, I get approx 78 ohm to any earth point.

Before I rebuild the carbs and start it etc. any ideas what this might be, or how to check what it might be?

Cheers

Im guessing in the past a bodger has fashioned an accessory power outlet, once you start to see chocolate block connectors time to strip it all back & start again using the wiring diagram & do the joins correctly with the right colour & importantly the right thickness of cable, reminds me of my rats nest of dodgy joins on my old 3AJ.

Its much easier to do it off the bike on a table & go through things methodically, repair the shit connections (which will cause you grief in the future). :banghead:

I wrote a little bit on the subject HERE, everyone hates wiring

Alternatively just buy another loom off ebay, but make sure its not been chopped & bodged also.

Thanks Mezo, the top picture is an earlier thing, at least three weeks ago  Only had the bike a month.

I think I want to ride this year and fiddle in depth next year. This last week or two I have replaced the clutch, wave plate in wrong place! Replaced ignition switch, just need to strip the carbs now to resolve the 2400 rpm tickover.

I connected the battery to test, bear in mind no carbs, and all lights good, neutral light good and it turns over on the button which make me wonder even more what the wire is!!

Back to the shed tomorrow.
